LINO PRINTING
This is a selection of work that emerged from an eight week unit of learning with 1st Year students. Students explored the principles of line, shape and space by creating a series of A5 one-colour lino prints. Inspired by the artist Camilla Catrambone, students explored the representation of a person through carefully selected inanimate objects. Students worked collaboratively in groups to set up an assemblage of symbolic objects, creating an ‘object portrait’ that captures the character of a particular person without the person being present. No smiles, faces or figures – just personal belongings ranging from kitchen utensils to jewellery. Students discovered how the objects a person is attached to and the way in which they use them tell a deeply personal story about a person’s life. Through preliminary observational studies in their Visual Art sketchpad, students explored how these objects and the stories they tell can offer an alternative way to record the appearance of someone. Learners formulated knowledge of composition and positive and negative space by using a viewfinder and their primary source photographs to create their final design. Learners developed an understanding of the block printing process and advanced printmaking skills and techniques through lino cutting, ink application, mark making and chine-collé by creating a series of prints.
