REPEAT PATTERN DESIGN
This is a selection of work that emerged from a ten-week unit of learning with 2nd Year students. Students used primary sources and the art elements of line, shape, colour and pattern to create a playful repeat pattern design based on a theme. The Visual Art sketchpad was used to record and collate research, sources and visual information to investigate the student’s chosen theme and identify relevant primary sources. From this, students explored their chosen primary source objects through a series of observational studies in order to make informed design choices. Learners advanced drawing and design skills as they explored the variety of methods applied in different stages of the design process. Students developed a deeper understanding of the design principles and applied this to create a well-balanced and harmonious design. Students engaged with the visual culture of the contemporary world by formulating a deeper understanding of contemporary design and exploring its links to popular culture, advertising, fashion, packaging and consumerism.
